OUR APPROACH

Our research pays close attention to how different parts of a person’s experience—like race, gender, and life events—shape their health. We listen to and follow the leadership of transgender and gender-diverse people, especially those who typically face the most discrimination.

The RISE Lab seeks to produce research that leads to real change and helps build a world where transgender people thrive.

The RISE Lab is led by Tonia Poteat, PhD, MPH, PA-C, AAHIVS, DFAAPA (she/her/hers). Dr. Poteat is a Professor in Duke University School of Nursing.

Dr. Poteat is a certified HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine and has devoted her clinical practice to providing medically appropriate and culturally competent care to members of the LGBTQ community as well as people living with HIV.
